Many of the South Bend neighborhoods has old and large trees, mostly maples. Which came under risk during storm cycles. Grass wants more, and HomeGuide says 6 to 8 inches if you plan to seed over it. The chips can stay as a mound that settles over a season, or get raked out and replaced with topsoil. It's usually not worth the effort to grind the stump yourself. You've gotta rent equipment, haul it and risk a back injury. When instead you can just hire a pro who can remove it in like thirty minutes.
A dead tree gets weaker every month it stands. Wisconsin's forestry division notes that ash starts losing strength as soon as the borer gets in, and many crews will not send a climber up an ash showing even 20 percent decline. So dead trees here mostly come down from a bucket truck, or from a crane where the truck cannot reach. Fungus at the base and bark sliding off in sheets both tell us how the tree will behave on the rope. Honestly, unless the tree threatens something like power lines, I would just let the nature do it's thing wildlife. Unless, of course, your HOA asks to do something about it.
Emerald ash borer was confirmed in Indiana on April 21, 2004, and the state DNR now reports it in all 92 counties, St. Joseph included. Indiana dropped its ash quarantine in October 2016. An ash we could climb and rig two summers ago may need a lift today, and waiting rarely brings the price down. In our view an ash that is already thin at the top is not worth saving. One with a full crown close to the house might be.
Silver maple was the most common street tree in a 2008 state count of South Bend. It grows fast to 50 to 80 feet, and Purdue warns that without regular pruning, wind and ice break its limbs because the wood and the branch structure are weak. The usual trouble spot is a tight V where two big leads split from one trunk. We thin the crown so wind passes through it and shorten the leads over the roof. A V worth keeping gets a cable.
Oaks get cut on a calendar. Purdue's advice where oak wilt is present is no pruning, wounding or removal from March through August, because sap beetles carry the fungus to fresh cuts, and a red oak can wilt and die by fall of the same year. White oaks tolerate the disease better, but we wait on every oak anyway. When a storm tears an oak limb in June, the break gets cleaned up and the real pruning waits for the dormant months.
A limb resting on shingles wears at them every time the wind moves it, and South Bend's 64.5 inches of snow a year, per NOAA, can turn a heavy one into a roof repair. Each overhanging branch gets tied off above the cut and lowered past the gutter on a rope, so nothing touches the roof on the way down. Cuts go back to a side branch at least a third the diameter of what comes off, the NC State rule, so the tree does not answer with a thicket of sprouts.
OSHA keeps anyone who is not a qualified line worker 10 feet from an energized line of 50 kV or less, and that 10 feet includes the pole saw in their hands. Indiana Michigan Power trims along the lines that run from pole to pole. The drop from the pole to your house is where most homeowner trees tangle, and it is the part people end up asking about. The trunk often still presses on the roof, so the first cuts release weight slowly while the rest stays tied back to something solid. Take photos from every side before anything moves, because the insurance adjuster will ask for them.
Replacement is the step most removal quotes leave out. HomeGuide says to set a new tree 3 to 4 feet from the old stump so it is not fighting leftover roots, and the city's fall planting window runs from October into December. A crane earns its day rate when a tree is dead, hollow or hanging over a house with no yard to lower into. It holds each section before the cut, so nothing swings and nobody climbs brittle wood. American Climbers, a tree company, reports that most single crane removals finish in a few hours, against two or three days for a climbing crew. In our view a crane is worth it on any dead ash taller than the house it stands next to.
Cabling ties two weak leads together high in the crown, about two-thirds of the way from the crotch to the branch tips, per UMass Extension, under the ANSI A300 Part 3 standard. Bracing puts rods through a weak union lower down. A cable in a split maple is a seat belt. It holds the halves together in a hard wind and does nothing to close the crack. So we only cable a tree you would otherwise keep, and say so when a split is past it.
Reduction makes a tree smaller by cutting leads back to side branches at least a third the diameter of the removed piece, by NC State's rule. Thinning takes whole branches out from inside the crown so wind moves through it. Topping is neither. NC State calls it an inappropriate pruning practice, and the stubs it leaves let decay in. If someone offers to top your tree, get another quote. I'd personally would never cut the top of a tree. That would cuts off the nutrients and cause the trunk to rot from the inside out.
A risk assessment weighs what could fail against what it would land on. Indiana has no state license for tree work, and ISA arborist certification is voluntary, so ask whoever looks at your tree which credential they hold. Around here the usual questions are a tight union on a silver maple and an ash nobody is sure about. Most assessments end with a plan, and a plan is often a trim.

Trimming, planting or removing one takes a permit from city Forestry at 574-299-4766, issued after the City Forester inspects. It is free, lasts a year, and lets you do the work yourself or hire it out.
According to NOAA, the airport averages 64.5 inches of snow a year, 51.4 of them from December through February. Summer brings wind. On June 11, 2026, WNDU reported storms near Clay High School that put one tree on a power line and uprooted another. Our arithmetic. Maples came to 48.6 percent. Norway maple and callery pear made up 19.7 percent, and a city ordinance has banned planting either one since September 1, 2021, so one street tree in five is a species nobody may plant here now. Reaching the city’s 40 percent canopy goal from about 22 percent takes roughly 100,000 new trees. In our view the next tree on most blocks should not be a maple.
